This refers to technology using &#8216;plasmon&#8217;, but it is a moderately difficult field to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will therefore explain the &#8216;plasmon&#8217; in simple terms as an entry point to the study!<br>Together we will unravel the mystery of the plasmon, which has been used unknowingly since ancient times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plasmon is a quantized form of plasma oscillation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-1-1-1024x844.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-1-1-1024x844.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-1-1-300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-1-1-768x633.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-1-1-1536x1266.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-1-1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasmon refers to quantized plasma oscillations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plasma oscillations are the oscillations of the charged particles that make up the plasma, which is &#8216;a mixture of positive ions and electrons&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we compare a metal that conducts electricity well (with many electrons moving freely) to a pond and its electrons to water, the waves caused by a stone (light beam) thrown into the pond are plasmons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three main types of plasmon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bulk plasmon: excited in solids, not excited by light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surface plasmon: excited on the surface, can be excited by light and propagate through space<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Localized plasmon: excited in nanostructures, can be excited by light, localized in space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When plasmon is used, two main phenomena are noted.<br>The following sections will explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two phenomena used in plasmon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The two main phenomena used when using plasmons are &#8216;surface plasmon resonance&#8217; and &#8216;plasmon absorption&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR)&#8217; is the interaction of electrons in metals with light.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"524\" src=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-2-1-1024x524.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-2-1-1024x524.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-2-1-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-2-1-768x393.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-2-1-1536x785.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-2-1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Surface Plasmon Resonance is the interaction of light with electrons in metals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nano-level microparticles and structures such as periodic rows of needle-like projection tips can produce effects such as resonance between electrons and light, resulting in high optical output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When surface plasmon resonance occurs, it is possible to detect substances rather than simply color them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Plasmon absorption&#8217; By nature, light does not interact with electrons in metals<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, electrons and metal surfaces in nanoparticles can interact with light under certain conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the surface plasmon resonance I mentioned earlier. The phenomenon of absorption of light at specific wavelengths by surface plasmon resonance is called &#8216;plasmon absorption&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how is plasmon used in society?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How plasmon is used in society<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-4-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-4-1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-4-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-4-1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-4-1-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/unnamed-4-1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, plasmon has been used since ancient times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the red color of stained glass found in medieval Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, traditional Japanese faceting (glassware) in red.<br>In those practices, the gold nanoparticles show a bright red color due to localized surface plasmon resonance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also been applied to the painting of vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, they are being considered for use as &#8216;optical devices&#8217; and a new research field called &#8216;nanophotonics&#8217; is being established.
