have been created, and synthetic resins are sometimes referred to as &#8216;resins&#8217; for short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the term \u201cresin\u201d originally encompasses natural materials as well, under Japanese standards (JIS), it is defined as \u201ca raw material for plastics,\u201d so it is primarily used to refer to synthetic materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plastic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/magnetic-force-microscopy-6-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/magnetic-force-microscopy-6-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/magnetic-force-microscopy-6-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/magnetic-force-microscopy-6-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/magnetic-force-microscopy-6.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic refers to molded products made from resin, which is produced by adding polymers. Generally, the term \u201csynthetic resin\u201d is often used to refer to \u201cplastic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JIS (Japan Industrial Planning) terminology is defined as follows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A material that contains a high polymer as an essential constituent and that can be given shape by flow at certain stages of processing into a finished product.<br>Reference (in Japanese): <a href=\"https:\/\/kikakurui.com\/k6\/K6900-1994-01.html\">JISK6900:1994 Plastics &#8211; Terminology.<\/a><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the JIS definition includes &#8216;polymers&#8217; and anything that can &#8216;change shape&#8217; is a &#8216;plastic&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of how polymers are used in society.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples of how polymers are used in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is surprisingly familiar and should be known as trivia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Superabsorbent polymers: e.g. disposable diapers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic6-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic6-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic6-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic6-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic6-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic6.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Superabsorbent polymers are used in disposable nappies and other products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Superabsorbent polymers are synthetic polymers that instantly absorb and swell on contact with water, turning the whole water into a gel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific examples are used in &#8216;disposable diapers&#8217;, &#8216;cold packs&#8217; and &#8216;disaster toilet cubicles&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nylon: clothing, etc.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"543\" src=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic7-2-1024x543.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic7-2-1024x543.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic7-2-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic7-2-768x408.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic7-2-1536x815.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic7-2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nylon, used in clothing and bags, is a type of synthetic polymer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is made from petroleum and is one of the most man-made fibers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has become an indispensable material for clothing as it is strong, quick-drying and highly elastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Polyethylene: e.g. plastic bags<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"724\" src=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic8-1024x724.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic8-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic8-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic8-768x543.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic8-1536x1087.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic8.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bags made of polyethylene, such as plastic bags from supermarkets are another type of polymer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naphtha, which is produced by heating crude oil, is thermally decomposed to extract ethylene, which is mixed with a catalyst and chemically reacted at high temperatures and pressures to produce polyethylene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rubber: rubber for tires of heavy vehicles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic9-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic9-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic9-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic9-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic9-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/agus.co.jp\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/pic9.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural rubber is another natural polymer (natural macromolecule).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natural rubber is made by coagulating the rubber component in the latex from the &#8216;para rubber tree&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are characterized by their high strength and are used for tires on heavy vehicles (buses and trucks), which are particularly heavy to bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Synthetic rubber is a type of synthetic polymer and is sometimes used in passenger car tires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a further aside, other natural polymers include &#8216;proteins&#8217;
