The Vienna University of Technology announced the successful development of an oxygen ion battery in March 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ceramic materials being studied by the Vienna University of Technology can absorb and release divalent oxygen ions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So an electric current is generated when moving from one ceramic material to another ceramic material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mechanism is similar to a lithium ion battery, with oxygen ions carrying electrons instead of lithium ions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As discussed earlier, in oxygen ion battery, the oxygen ions carry the electrons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With lithium-ion battery, if there is not enough lithium, the battery capacity may decrease and eventually become unusable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, even if there is a shortage of oxygen, the oxygen ion battery can continue to be used because it can be replenished from the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that they are not a replacement battery for smartphones or electric vehicles, where lithium-ion batteries are currently used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, they may be useful as temporary storage sites for large-scale energy generated by solar and wind power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Theoretically, the energy density of oxygen ion battery is said to be \u2153 below that of lithium-ion batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy density is a measure of how much electricity can be stored, and a battery of the same size with a lower energy density will have a smaller battery capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
